Only one OVA of the series, directed by Hajime Kameyama, was released prior to the television series, thus this release is considered the original OVA. At the end of the 1990s, a new trend of OVA success was born in Japan, starting with Chibi Maruko-chan. Nippon Television had a heavy hand in creating the trend, and many other television channels followed suit. However, with the "Nippon TV Mystery" wave in the year 2000, the trend continued to take its momentum from television, and since then, many have complained that OVAs are not of high quality anymore. This phenomenon can be seen with most recent anime, where the third season of Captain Tsubasa, which was really strong in its first two seasons, now it is pretty much downhill. With Samurai Spirits 2, one of its writers, Satoshi Kon, would go on to work on the highly-acclaimed, Shinkenger, in the year 2003. The latter half of the OVA has no English dub, only having Japanese voices for the female leads, but the English names are written down in the end credits. The opening theme is "Sayonara Days" by Kokia, which is also a song from the movie Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei. The ending theme is "Yume" by Akira, whose song is from his movie, Lupin the 3rd. Despite the fact that the OVA originally had a high profile television series and one film before it, and that the series itself has a fairly large fanbase in Japan, few people have ever heard of this OVA. Due to it being the first appearance of the vampire Shiro, several fans thought that he was the vampire hunter Silver Mask from Rurouni Kenshin. It was only after this OVA that Samurai Spirits 2 was adapted into a TV series, so most fans assumed that this is what Samurai Spirits 2 is based on. A loose adaptation of Masakazu Katsura's manga, Samurai Spirits 2 was also influenced by the novel, The Innamorati.
